"Dual Process looks at instinct and rationality through the lenses of six performers.

Experience an intermingling of movement and sound, an exploration into what really makes us tick. Journey behind the eyes to an investigation of modes of thinking, the pros and cons of listening to the heart and the power of self-reflection.

Dual Process features 3rd year dance students from the Victorian Collage of the Arts Caroline Ellis, Audrey Desmond and Wendy Yu, led by Katie Cook in her choreographic debut with lighting design by Jono Wedgwood. The work will also feature a live score by the musical duo of Kane Anthony Palamara and Andy O’Connor, utilising analogue and digital instrumentation to craft an immersive soundscape, fluctuating between chaotic cacophonies of sound, electronic and post punk influenced sections, and moments of peaceful, considered beauty.

In psychology, the Dual Process Theory provides an account of how thought can arise in two different ways, or as a result of two different processes. Often, the two processes consist of an implicit (automatic), unconscious process and an explicit (controlled), conscious process.

In both its musical and performative elements, the work will serve to demonstrate the influence of the dual process which drives so much of human behaviour. Through movement, sound and visual components the artists will explore both the controlled and the automatic, the improvised and the set, the gut feelings and the rational thought. Inhibition is shed in favour of pure, honest, unadulterated instinctual creation, in a unified setting."
